It was a random event. My friend had been working for Donna Karan in NY running her studio in the west village. One of his jobs as studio manager was to orchestrate overall logistics for the fashion shows that took place twice a year, in spring and in the fall. on his visits home to Seattle he would recount unbelievable stories from the world of the The Fashionistas, and explained the process to me in the simplest of terms:
"Basically it takes a million bucks, 500 people and two weeks to put on a 12 minute show that no one really seems to care about."
Suffice to say, I was immediately intrigued and asked if I might not photograph such an event from a documentary perspective. He proposed the idea to the powers that be and soon awarded me an all access pass and an editorial day rate. Sweet.
